BACKGROUND NOTE



The Fifty Year Club of Burd’s School District 38, Lancaster County, Nebraska, was established to “perpetuate the memory of this country school and its teachers and to maintain its traditions.”  According to the club’s rules and regulations, an annual reunion was held at Burd’s Schoolhouse on the first Sunday in October.  Membership in the club consisted of, “All those who attended this school fifty years or more ago and have paid the previous years’ dues, a new class to be added each year.  Honorary members include teachers who taught in District 38 fifty years or more ago, the present teacher, the present Board of Directors of District 38 and the County Superintendent.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of one box and one oversize folder of materials relating to the Fifty Year Club of Burd’s School District 38, Lancaster County, Nebraska.  The materials date from 1946 to 1968 and include rules and regulations of the club, rosters, biographical information on members, information regarding annual reunions, correspondence, clippings and miscellaneous other items.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
