BACKGROUND NOTE
Born at Nebraska City, Nebraska, in 1885, Frank August Bartling was the son of Herman and Friederike Bartling. Herman Bartling owned and operated the Bartling Grain Company in Nebraska City until his death in 1905. After his death, his sons, Herman H., Jr., Edward and Frank took over the business. Frank first worked as a grain buyer and salesman with the company and later served as Secretary and Treasurer. Frank also worked with his brother in the Edward Bartling Seed Company, and served as postmaster in Nebraska City for a time. Frank married Emma Johnson around 1915, and the couple had two daughters. Frank August Bartling died on November 27, 1964, and was buried in Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City, Nebraska.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one folder containing various papers by and about Frank A. Bartling and the Bartling family. The bulk of the collection consists of various typescript articles written by Frank Bartling relating to the history of Nebraska City. Included are articles about the Nebraska City volunteer fire department and the Otoe Hook and Ladder Company; Wyuka Cemetery; livery stables; Arbor Day and Arbor Lodge. Also included is a letter from Bartling to A.E. Sheldon, September 10, 1933, describing the grain business of Bartling’s father, Herman H. Bartling, in the 1880s. Additional items relate to the Edward Bartling Seed Company and to the Herman Bartling estate selling various stock shares to the Nebraska City Street Railway Company.
