SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of transcripts of the diaries of Frank W. Littlefield of Dorchester, Nebraska. Entries span the years 1893-1945, and include such topics as farming methods, the role of the church in the community, school district meeting news, ladies circles, entertainment (the opera house, etc.), the effects of national news on a small community, the impact of World Wars I and II, and news of births, deaths, and marriages of family and neighbors. Included are a detailed index of the diaries, and appendices with photocopies of: genealogical charts of the Littlefield family, photographs, and documents (will and probate materials of Frank W. Littlefield, selected letters, maps, etc.), as well as reminiscences and an “Early History of Frank W. Littlefield” by his daughter, Ada Littlefield.  Several of the original diaries have also been added to the collection.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
