SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection [formerly MS2735] consists of the correspondence of Frederick G. Holmes from 1871 to 1874. The majority of the letters date from 1871 to 1872. The material in this collection relates to Holmes’ activities as agent at the Yankton Agency, Dakota Territory in 1871-1872. Holmes settled with his family near Nemaha City in 1858 and combined farming with a medical practice.

Note:  Related materials can be found in the following collection: RG3016.AM: Holmes, Reuben. The included papers [1871-1872] of Frederick G. Holmes relate to F. Holmes acting as an agent for the Yankton Sioux. A short dictionary of English and Sioux words is also included. RG3016.AM consists of one reel of microfilm.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
