BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Gary Lee Anderson, son of Roy C. and Iola (Asp) Anderson, was born October 8, 1939 in Holdrege, Phelps County, Nebraska. He graduated from Axtell High School, Kearney County, Nebraska, in 1957. After attending the University of Nebraska for one year, Anderson enlisted in the army. He later received a B.A. from Hastings College and a B.D. from the San Francisco Theological Seminary.

Anderson served in the army through 1962, resigning as a Lieutenant. He then served in the Nebraska National Guard, 1963-1965, and the California National Guard, 1965-1968. While in the army, Anderson was a member of the U.S. Army shooting team, taking honors in European competition in 1960, the year he first made the Olympic team. In 1962 Anderson won his first world championship in rifle competition, a feat he would accomplish six more times. He won two Olympic gold medals, one each in 1964 and 1968, in the 300 meter rifle competition. In his marksmanship career, Anderson set six world records and won fourteen national championships. He served as president of the Nebraska Rifle and Pistol Association and was admitted to the Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame in 1971.

Anderson’s political career began when he was elected, as a Republican, to the office of Kearney County Treasurer. In November of 1972 he was elected to a four-year term in the Unicameral representing Nebraska’s 37th District. In September of 1973 Anderson changed his affiliation from the Republican to the Democratic Party, citing the Republican Party’s adherence to partisan politics as the cause for his change. After serving his term, Anderson did not seek re-election. In 1974 he became executive director for operations of the National Rifle Association in Washington, D.C.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of 12 boxes of manuscript material arranged in two series of legislative files: (1) Subject Files, 1973-1976; and (2) Legislative Bill Files, 1973-1976.

The collection relates to bills, programs, and topics under consideration during Senator Gary L. Anderson’s years in the Nebraska Unicameral, 1973-1976.

The two series of this collection complement each other and, therefore, it is necessary to check both the Subject Files and Legislative Bill Files for the most comprehensive use of this collection. The topics covered in each series are, in many cases, the same, but the Subject Files of Series 1 are arranged topically in alphabetical order, while the Legislative Bill files of Series 2 are in numerical order according to the bill number.

It should be noted that there is a slight difference in the type of material found in the two series. Both the Subject and Legislative Bill files contain letters, memos, research reports, and pamphlets relating to proposed legislation and constituent attitudes. However, Series 1 contains more correspondence to and from Anderson’s constituents. Series 2 is more likely to contain memos or reports from researchers and colleagues investigating proposed legislation.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
