BACKGROUND NOTE



Born in Newport, Nebraska, on December 3, 1891, George Elwell attended public school in Newport.  By 1917, he was working as a baker in Bassett, Nebraska.  By 1930, Elwell was married to Susan Jillson, had three sons, and was working as an undertaker at Adams, Nebraska.  By 1940, the Elwells had moved to Arapahoe, Nebraska.  George Elwell died in Beatrice, Nebraska, on November 8, 1976.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one item, a funeral director’s memo book used by George Elwell while living and working in Adams, Nebraska.  Entries in the book date between 1929 and 1936.  Information in the book includes name of the deceased, when and where they died, cause of death, family information, burial location and other information about the funeral.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
