BACKGROUND NOTE
George Dallas Follmer was born in Monteur County, Pennsylvania, on July 17, 1844. He moved to Iowa in 1868, entering into the general merchandise business with his brother-in-law, O.W. Montgomery. The partnership was dissolved in 1870 when Montgomery went to Nuckolls County, Nebraska. Follmer followed a year later, and Follmer and Montgomery became promoters and builders of the new county. Follmer assisted with the legal organization of Nuckolls County and became the second County Treasurer. Follmer was a farmer, livestock raiser, and real estate investor. He and his son sold land in Nebraska and adjoining states. Follmer also served as the Commissioner of Public Lands and Buildings, 1900-1904, and was a member of the Oregon Trail Commission, whose task it was to place markers and monuments along the Oregon Trail. George Dallas Follmer died in 1914.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one folder of material containing correspondence and a few misc. items. This collection dates from 1911-1918 and relates to George Follmer’s role on the Oregon Trail Commission and as an organizer of Nuckolls County, Nebraska. The bulk of the material consists of letters received by George D. Follmer containing reminiscences of early settlers along the Oregon Trail. The correspondents are attempting to answer Follmer’s questions about first houses, other first buildings and early events specifically on the Oregon Trail. Letters discussing the best type of fencing material for enclosing the Oregon Trail monuments are also included, as are letters to Mrs. Eva Smith Follmer, 1918, in response to invitations to attend the unveiling of monuments. Non-correspondence items that are included in this collection are early handwritten records of Nuckolls County, providing names of early settlers and their land holdings. An invitation to the unveiling exercises of the monument to mark the Oregon Trail in Nuckolls County, 1918, is also included.
