BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
George Edward Hartman, son of Frederick and Margaret (Mitchell) Hartman, was born July 10, 1868 in Shelby County, Illinois. After spending the first twenty-four years of his life on his father’s farm, George left for Minnesota and South Dakota where he worked as a grain scooper, a janitor, and as a helper in a father-daughter dental practice. Working in the dental practice probably influenced Hartman’s career choice, as he enrolled in the Western Dental College in Kansas City in 1897. He finished his studies at the Omaha Dental College in 1900. During his training in Omaha, Hartman worked with the local dentist in Randolph, Nebraska. After receiving his degree, Dr. Hartman began full-time practice in Randolph, staying there until 1947.
In that year, he moved to Wayne and set up practice there. He retired in 1967 and lived in Blair until his death on January 22, 1970. Dr. Hartman was married to Bertha Mae Locke in 1899. Together they had five children. Bertha died in 1922 and in the following year Dr. Hartman married Grace Hall. One son was born during this marriage. Grace Hartman died in 1932.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one account book dating from 1931-1935 and 1950-1967. The volume relates to the dental practice of Dr. George E. Hartman of Randolph and Wayne, Nebraska. The accounts are arranged chronologically and include names of Dr. Hartman’s patients, sketchy information on dental work performed, and cost.
