SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The Gere family collection consists of approximately 5,400 items arranged in eight series: (1) correspondence, 1819-1954; (2) Willa Cather correspondence, 1891-1945 and undated (also on microfilm); (3) undated correspondence; (4) miscellaneous papers; (5) diaries, journals (generally undated and unsigned), biographies, bibliographies, and genealogies; (6) printed matter and clippings, certificates; (7) miscellaneous books, programs, and post cards.



Correspondents include: William Jennings Bryan (1904), David Butler (1869-1870), James H. Garfield (1904-1909), Clement Chase (1884), James W. Haverstick (1864-1869), P. W. Hitchcock (1874), G. H. Holcomb (1860-1861), O. H. Irish (1867-1869), Charles F. Manderson (1889), David H. Mercer (1902-1904), George W. Norris (1923), O. Paddock (1875-1891), Alvin Saunders (1872), W. C. Seacrest (1917), O. S. Stewart (1867-1868), John Taffe (1870-1871), John M. Thayer (1870-1877).



The Gere collection contains a great variety of material including: the Cather letters; a series of letters from Charles Henry Gere to Miss Mariel Clapham concerning the 1871 impeachment of Governor Butler; letters from Pvt. Ozro L. Woods, A.E.F., 1917, telling his experiences during W.W.I.; and a series of diaries and journals, one of which gives an account of flood and sickness at Table Rock, Nebraska Territory. Also Civil War diaries. The most prominent member of the Gere family, Charles Henry Gere, was a political figure, scholar, and founder of the Nebraska State Journal.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
