BACKGROUND NOTE
Born November 1, 1910 at Ogallala, Nebraska, Gertrude Louise Hopken started working for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company office in Ogallala on May 20, 1929. She worked there for six years before transferring to the telephone office in McCook on May 5, 1935. Hopken transferred to the Los Angeles (California) Richmond office on September 22, 1941. She later transferred to offices in Thornwall, Los Angeles and Ventura before ending up in the San Bernardino office in June of 1945. It was during this time that she met Chester Carl Hamilton. They would marry on November 3, 1946. Gertrude Hamilton took furlough from the telephone company on November 1, 1947. Gertrude (Hopken) Hamilton died in Fontana, California, in 2005. She is buried in Mountain View Cemetery in San Bernardino, California.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one scrapbook compiled by Gertrude (Hopken) Hamilton documenting her career with the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. The scrapbook includes photographs of employees, staff and managers of the telephone company offices in Ogallala and McCook, Nebraska, as well as some of the offices in California. Materials in the scrapbook date from ca. 1929-1946.
