HISTORICAL NOTE
Hamilton Houston Meek was born in Ohio in 1841. Hamilton and his first wife had two children in Illinois, Myrta M. and Lillie B. By 1880 Hamilton was a widower living in Lewis County, Missouri with his two children. Soon after, Elizabeth Rhoda Scott became his second wife. A son, Emmett Hamilton Meek, and a daughter, Harriet “Hattie” Ella Meek, were born to them in Missouri. Shortly after Hattie’s birth, the family moved to Clay County, Nebraska. After graduating from Clay Central High School in 1904, Hattie taught in Verona and at “county school.” In 1908 she attended Lincoln Business College, in Lincoln, Nebraska. A year later she began a business career with Lincoln Stove Repair. Hattie Meek died in Union, New Jersey, on May 17, 1973.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one box of manuscript material containing correspondence (1904-1970), an address (1904), and miscellany, relating to Hattie Meek and the Meek family. Correspondence to and from members of the Meek family is included. Correspondence dealing with family history appears in letters to and from Hattie Meek, 1965-1970. The address is Hattie Meek’s valedictory speech from 1904. Miscellaneous items include autograph books during Hattie’s school years, report cards and business cards, and clippings and funeral notices about members of the Meek family.
