BACKGROUND NOTE
Born in New York City on June 26, 1845, Hiland Hill Wheeler attended Amherst College for two years before joining the Union Army. Wheeler served with 9th New York Infantry and was discharged at the end of the Civil War as a 2nd Lieutenant. Hiland Wheeler came to Nebraska in 1870 and served as the deputy clerk in the Nebraska Supreme Court. He married Grace Mason in 1885 and the couple had three children, Mason, Grace and Hiland, Jr.
Wheeler then spent several years in Boise, Idaho, in the early 1890s, working in their early state government. The Wheelers returned to Nebraska and Hiland lived in Lincoln for the rest of his life. Hiland H. Wheeler died in Lincoln on February 11, 1928. He is buried in Wyuka Cemetery in the Wheeler family plot next to his wife and two sons.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one volume, a letter copying book kept by Hiland Hill Wheeler. The entries in the book date from 1892-1899. The entries all appear to be personal correspondence, mostly relating to various business and financial affairs. Only the first forty-one pages of the book are used.
