Howard Ira Kirkpatrick was a music professor at the University of Nebraska for many years. As an undergraduate, he directed the Oberlin College Glee Club. After studying in Europe for a time, Kirkpatrick returned to the United States and made his home in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1900 he joined the staff of the University School of Music. Kirkpatrick served as instructor of voice and later Director of the School of Music at the University of Nebraska until his retirement in 1939.

While at the University, Kirkpatrick collaborated with Hartley Burr Alexander in the production of two historical pageants. In addition to occasional compositions, he was the author of two operas, Olaf and La Minuette. Kirkpatrick served as organist for the St. Paul’s Methodist Church, and for many years he conducted the production of the Messiah on campus. He was also responsible for starting the All State High School summer program at the University. After his retirement in 1939, Kirkpatrick moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he died on March 19, 1952. He was survived by his wife, Vera Ray (Wattles) Kirkpatrick.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
