BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Ivan Harold Mattson was born in Goteborg, Sweden, in 1895. In 1905 his family came to the United States and settled in Kearney, Nebraska where he attended school, graduating from Kearney State Teachers College. In 1920 he opened his own studio in Kearney. He served as: president of the Nebraska Photographers Association; member of the Kearney City Council; mayor of Kearney, 1939-1943; president of Nebraska League of Municipalities; state senator, 1935-1936; and member of many civic organizations. He died of tuberculosis in October of 1952.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of two folders: 1) Correspondence, 1932-1953; 2) Miscellaneous cards, certificates, etc. The collection relates generally to the business and daily life of I.H. Mattson.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.

