BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Born at Providence, Rhode Island on July 24, 1829, John Henry Cheever married Elizabeth Noble in Wayne County, Indiana, on November 3, 1853.  The Cheevers came to Nebraska City from Rhode Island in the spring or summer of 1857.  John Cheever speculated in real estate, and in 1858 was a partner in Cheever, Sweet and Company.  He was elected to the Council of the Territory of Nebraska for the counties of Otoe, Cass, Dodge, Platte and Monroe in 1858.  By 1870, Cheever had moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was working as a stockbroker..  In 1875, the Cheevers were living in New York state.  By 1880, John and Elizabeth were living at Providence, Rhode Island.  Elizabeth Cheever died in 1899.  John H. Cheever died on April 3, 1904, in New York City.  John and Elizabeth Cheever are buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists mostly of business and political correspondence, 1859-1860, primarily relating to John Cheever.  Cheever was a member of the Council of the Territory of Nebraska for the counties of Otoe, Cass, Dodge, Platte and Monroe, and a partner with James Sweet in Cheever, Sweet and Company.  The collection includes copies of legislation and other governmental papers from the period as well as general business correspondence relating to Cheever, Sweet and Company.  Also included are materials relating to the incorporation of the Nebraska City & Denver Express Company (Nebraska City), and the State Bank of Nebraska (Omaha).

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
