SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains primarily land transaction records for John Irwin of Otoe County, Nebraska. The land covered by the collection was bought and sold in Lancaster, Otoe, and Douglas Counties in the late 1850s to early 1860s. One letter, dated April 13, 1869, is written by Thomas P. Kennard to Irwin concerning the sale of 80 acres of land in Lincoln, Nebraska. Another letter, dated March 11, 1893, is written to Elijah D. Marnell from J. Sterling Morton from the Department of Agriculture in Washington DC concerning the employment of Sadie Hawley in Nebraska City, Nebraska.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
