BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE



Born in Omaha, Nebraska on August 1, 1945, John Joseph Cavanaugh graduated from Creighton University Law School in 1972.  He passed the Nebraska Bar and started his own law practice in Omaha.  In 1972 Cavanaugh was elected to the Nebraska Legislature and served until 1976.  He was then elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Nebraska’s 2nd District from 1977 to January of 1981.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of 54 boxes of legislative files, correspondence, etc. documenting John J. Cavanaugh’s service in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977-1980.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
