BACKGROUND NOTE
Born on August 24, 1853, at Canaan, Connecticut, John Larke Pierce attended Knox Academy at Galesburg, Illinois before receiving his law degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1878. He married Margaret Harris on May 20, 1880. Pierce practiced law in Champaign, Illinois, before moving to Nebraska in the early 1880s. He served as the City attorney in Norfolk, Nebraska for several years, as well as being involved in real estate and farm loans through the early 1890s. From 1896 to 1902 he was the manager for Omaha Mercury, a law publication.
Pierce served as the Deputy Auditor with the Nebraska Department of Insurance from 1903 to 1909. After leaving the Department of Insurance he served as the clerk of the Lancaster County Court. John L. Pierce died in Lincoln, Nebraska, on August 5, 1942. He is buried in Lincoln Memorial Park.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one folder containing a typescript reminiscence by John L. Pierce. In the reminiscence he describes coming to Nebraska; early business ventures; animal life; domestic activities; travel; and weather, including descriptions of tornadoes and blizzards. The reminiscences are undated, but they cover the time period from 1883 to the 1890s.
