BACKGROUND NOTE

F.A. Schneider Hardware, established in Omaha in 1855 by F.A. Schneider, operated until the 1890s when it was purchased and incorporated as the Johnson Hardware Company in 1894. Incorporators of the company were Lucien Pettingill, E.G. Wilmoth, H.M. Johnson and C.W. Johnson. The Johnson Hardware Company has served the Omaha community ever since.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of various business and financial records relating to the Johnson Hardware Company and its predecessor, F.A. Schneider Hardware. The bulk of the records date between 1871 and 1884, when F.A. Schneider was running the business. Records include various account books, day books and ledgers, as well as invoices and receipts.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
