BACKGROUND NOTE



Born on August 21, 1912 at Perry, South Carolina, Leon Truedell Hutto moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1931 to attend the Dr. Benjamin F. Bailey Sanatorium School of Nursing (also known as Green Gables Sanatorium).  He graduated as a registered nurse with the last graduating class in 1935.  Hutto worked at the sanatorium from 1935 until it closed in 1958.  He then went to work at the Lincoln State Hospital (Lincoln Regional Center) until his retirement as central supply supervisor in 1977.  In 1960 Hutto received a Nebraska Nurses Association award for twenty-five years of nursing service.  He was the first male recipient of the award.  Hutto was elected as the first male president of District 3 of the Nebraska Nurses Association in 1962.  He was also a member of the American Rose Society, a member of Lancaster Lodge 54 AF&AM, and a charter member of the Capital City Kiwanis Club.  Leon T. Hutto died on June 12, 1978.  He is buried next to his wife, Esther (Paulsen) Hutto, in Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Nebraska.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of one box of papers relating to the nursing career of Leon T. Hutto.  Materials include applications, training course materials, letters of recommendation, licensing materials, diplomas, certificates, etc.  The materials in the collection date from 1930 to 1978.
