BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Born in New York on January 29, 1800, Lorin Miller arrived in Omaha, Nebraska Territory in 1854. A civil engineer by trade, Miller surveyed the Jeffrey’s addition to the city. He became active in politics and served as mayor of Omaha from 1865-1867. He died in Omaha in 1888.
Note: Miller’s son, George L. Miller, also became an influential leader in Omaha.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of one item, a letter written February 27, 1859, from Lorin Miller to Indian agent William Wallace Dennison. In the letter Miller defends the Pawnee Indians’ character and recommends against moving the tribe. Miller discusses the positive aspects of the Pawnee Indians and discounts previous slurs made about the Pawnee by white settlers in the area of Columbus and along the Elkhorn River.
