BACKGROUND NOTE

Born in Omaha, Nebraska Territory, in 1861, Lucy Virginia Drexel was the daughter of Frederick and Christina (Lingner) Drexel.  She grew up in Omaha and then attended the Nebraska Baptist Seminary in Gibbon, Nebraska.  She married Henry G. Harte at Omaha, Nebraska, on September 10, 1891.  After Henry Harte’s death in 1934, Lucy lived with her daughter, Ruth (Harte) Eggerss, in Van Wert, Ohio.  Lucy (Drexel) Harte died in 1946.  She and Henry are buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Omaha, Nebraska.  The couple was survived by three daughters, Ruth (Harte) Eggerss, Margaret (Harte) Eldredge, and Virginia (Harte) Longwell.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of Lucy Drexel’s autograph album, 1880-1885, while she was at Nebraska Baptist Seminary, Gibbon, Nebraska. Autographs of friends and family are included.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
