BACKGROUND NOTE

The Nebraska Music Teachers Association (NMTA) originated at a meeting held in Lincoln, Nebraska in March of 1916 during the convention of the Supervisors National Association. Willard Kimball, founder of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Music, was elected president of the newly formed association. The first NMTA convention was held the following year. Conventions were held each year until 1942 when the state was divided into several districts and the NMTA became dormant as a result of the war emergency. Through the efforts of the Omaha Music Teachers Association, the NMTA was reactivated in January of 1953.

The Nebraska Music Teachers Association currently (as of 2011) has a membership of approximately 300. The NMTA is an affiliate of the Music Teachers National Association. The NMTA is composed of several local associations, including the Omaha Music Teachers Association; the Lincoln Music Teachers Association; the Central Nebraska Music Teachers Association; and the Platte Valley Music Teachers Association.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
