BACKGROUND NOTE

The 1920 Boone County Atlas lists a C. A. (Charles A.) Nichols, with wife, Mary, and children Lyle, Raymond, Clarence, Jessie, Bessie, and Lloyd living in Manchester Precinct. This could be the C. A. Nichols who began the Nichols Hardware Store, later called Nichols and Son, in Albion, Nebraska, during 1920s. Apparently, this business continued operations into the 1940s.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box and twelve oversize volumes arranged in four series: 1) Day Books, 1927-1941; 2) Inventory Books, 1928-1931; 3) Invoice Ledger, 1927-1930; and (4) Account Book, undated. All of these records were generated by the Nichols (or Nichols and Son) Hardware Store of Albion, Boone County, Nebraska.

The Day Books, 1927-1941, of Series 1 provide a daily record of items purchased at the Nichols Hardware Store. Information includes the name of the purchaser, item purchased, cost, as well as a daily computation of total cash sales, payments on accounts, and money paid out. Series 2 contains Inventory Books, 1928-1931. These record the type and quantity of items in stock, the price per unit, and total value.

The Invoice Ledger, 1927-1930, of Series 3 records the name of the firm ordering material from Nichols Hardware Store, their address, amount of invoice, deductions, discount, freight cost, when due, amount remitted, and date paid. Series 4 consists of an undated Account Book. This lists the name of the account and quantity and type of items purchased. Some prices are shown.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
