BACKGROUND NOTE

The Omaha Stockyards officially began business in 1884. The Omaha Livestock Exchange was established in 1889. The Exchange was a voluntary non-profit trade association formed for the purpose of “establishing and maintaining a live stock exchange at Omaha, Nebraska to the end than an orderly and well regulated livestock market shall be in constant operation, to the advancement of the commercial and mercantile interests of the livestock industry in Omaha, the general business interests of the community, and all concerned in the livestock industry in the entire Omaha trade area, and so to the advancement of the interests of the whole general public.”

The Exchange originally charged $10 annual dues to members, and the main purpose of the Exchange was to promote the stockyards and to protect livestock buyers and sellers. They would arbitrate disputes between members. In later years the Exchange would send speakers to farming and ranching communities throughout the trade region to give talks and disseminate information about improved methods of raising, transporting and selling livestock. The Exchange also helped sponsor various events, including the 4-H Award Achievement Days, 4-H Livestock Marketing Days and the Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock Show.

The stockyards reached its peak in the 1950s, becoming the world’s largest cattle market. The Exchange consisted of hundreds of members representing thirty-nine states. The 1960s brought decentralization of livestock marketing, and by 1968, three of the largest packing companies closed. Finally, in 1976, the last major packing house closed in South Omaha.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
