BACKGROUND NOTE

The thought of organizing the women connected with the Press in Omaha originated at a luncheon at the Loyal Hotel, Wednesday, September 30, 1914, given by Omaha newspaper women in honor of the Suffrage and Anti-Suffrage women speakers, all newspaper women, who took part in the Nebraska Suffrage campaign.  As a result of the interest shown, the Omaha Woman’s Press Club was organized at the Loyal Hotel, Thursday, October 29, 1914.  The first officers elected were Harriet S. MacMurphy, President; Faith Lee Hoel, Vice-President; an Ella Fleishman, Secretary-Treasurer.  The object of the association was to encourage women in literary work, and to promote good fellowship among newspaper women and writers.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box containing records relating to the Omaha Woman’s Press Club.  The records date from 1918 to 1935 and include various organizational records, minutes of meetings, correspondence, a scrapbook, some printed materials and a few miscellaneous items.  One short letter from Louise Pound appears in the correspondence folder.  In the letter, dated January 23, 1932, Pound requests that they reserve a place for her at the upcoming Press Club dinner.
