BACKGROUND NOTE

First established in 1864 as the National Plasterer’s Union, the Operative Plasterers & Cement Finishers International Association is the oldest building and construction trades union in the United States.  The union amended its constitution in 1887 to include Canadian workers.  In 1914 they changed their name from the Operative Plasterers’ International Union to the Operative Plasterer’s & Cement Finishers’ International Association.  Reflecting the fact that its members did more than finish cement, the union changed its name in 1951 to the Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Masons’ International Association.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one box containing correspondence, receipts, etc. relating to the daily operations of the Operative Plasterers & Cement Finishers International Association, No. 22 at Lincoln, Nebraska.  Most of the materials relate to payment or non-payment of membership dues.  Also included are copies of the organization’s constitution and bylaws.  The collection dates from 1925 to 1928.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
