HISTORY NEBRASKA MANUSCRIPT FINDING AID

RG5428.AM:  Oral Histories of Farm Women – Nebraska

Interview transcripts: 1989

Nebraska:  Farm families

Size:  0.5 cu.ft.; 1 box

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box containing transcripts of oral history interviews conducted with various residents of Webster County, Nebraska.  Terry (Kuhn) Sheahan conducted the interviews in 1989 as part of a graduate research seminar project at Northern Illinois University.  The goal of the project was to compare the lives of men and women who had lived most of their lives on farms located in two very different climatic regions, Webster County, Nebraska, and Dekalb County, Illinois.  Information spans the years 1905 to ca. 1960.  The questions focused on daily work, marital and family relations, community and personal values.  Much of the information describes life and activities during the Great Depression.  The Nebraska Humanities Council provided the funds to transcribe the Nebraska interviews.

Note:  This collection contains the Nebraska interview transcripts only.  Copies of the Nebraska tapes are available at the Webster County Museum in Red Cloud, Nebraska.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
