SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of three items relating to the Powell family of Grand Island, Nebraska. The first item is a letter dated May 17, 1945 from William E. Powell to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Powell, of Grand Island, Neb. The letter was written by Powell upon his release from a German POW camp in the town of Habaklakdru in Sudetenland. In the letter he discusses the kinds of food he has been given since his release, the activities provided by the Red Cross, and his looking forward to returning home. The second item is a short newspaper clipping regarding Powell’s release and the letter received by his parents. The final item is a newspaper clipping regarding the 66th wedding anniversary of Frank and Sarah Powell (at the time living in Artesia, California, but formerly of Grand Island, Nebraska). The clipping discusses the Powell family’s settling in Nebraska in 1867, interactions with the Indians, meeting Buffalo Bill Cody, etc. Frank and Sarah Powell are the paternal grandparents of William E. Powell.
