SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The bulk of this collection consists of correspondence from and to Robert Bruce Payne while he was serving in Company D, 1st Nebraska, 1898-1899. In letters from Payne to family and friends, he describes his experiences in Hawaii and the Philippines. By 1899, he regrets the United States plan “…to subjugate the people Spain was trying to subjugate.” Letters from home detail local news and express concern about the United States role in the Philippines. Payne’s diary describes daily events during February 1899. Calling card included. Also included is a theme written by Payne during his freshman year, 1893, at the University of Nebraska. The theme is entitled, “The Sod House.”
