BACKGROUND NOTE
Born January 3, 1930 at Kingsley, Iowa, Ronald W. Hunter graduated from Wayne State College. He graduated in 1955 from the University of Nebraska Law School and was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. He served as a special agent with the U.S. Army Counter-Intelligence Corps in Baltimore and San Francisco until 1957. From 1957 to 1961 he practiced law in Des Moines, Iowa. From 1961 until his retirement in 2013 he practiced law in Omaha, Nebraska.
Hunter was also interested in history and historic preservation. In 1975 he became president of the Western Heritage Society and fought to save Omaha’s Union Station from demolition. He served as president for over a decade and spearheaded the opening of the Western Heritage Museum, now known as The Durham Museum. Hunter served on the boards of the Douglas County Historical Society and the Nebraska State Historical Society. He wrote several books, including Western Heritage Museum: The First Ten Years. Ronald W. Hunter died on November 6, 2014. His buried in Calvary Cemetery, Omaha, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn, and his second wife, Stephanie.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of an oversize bound scrapbook relating to the life and career of Ronald W. Hunter. The volume consists entirely of photocopies and includes newspaper clippings, letters and photos. The materials range in date from 1950 to 1992 and cover his college days, law school achievements, military service and his service in Omaha as an attorney, with special reference to notable zoning and preservation cases. The scrapbook also documents Hunter’s work as an advocate of historic preservation, historian and his involvement with the Western Heritage Society and Museum.
