BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Schuyler Colfax was a businessman and politician from Indiana. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1855-1869 and was Vice President under Ulysses S. Grant.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of a letter, dated March 23, 1870, from Schuyler Colfax, U.S. Vice President under U.S. Grant. The letter is written to W.B. Lamphere and Jessie M. Sutherland, committee members of the Schuyler, Nebraska, Library and Literary Association. In the letter, Colfax accepts an offer of honorary membership in the society. He also indicates what an honor it was to have a county and a city named for him by the Nebraska Legislature. Also included is the envelope in which the letter was sent.
