BACKGROUND NOTE
Born at Williamsburg, Iowa, on April 25, 1873, John Owen Sigel Matson spent most of his life in Lincoln, Nebraska. He married Maude Ford on May 30, 1899, and the couple had two children. For many years, he served as a member of the faculty and of the board of trustees of Cotner College in Lincoln. Sigel Matson died on January 11, 1956, and he is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of two record books. The first volume consists of journal entries recorded by Sigel’s father, Samuel Matson. The brief entries date from 1886 to 1889 and describe daily farm life, weather, crop information, etc., on the Matson farm near Belvidere, Thayer County, Nebraska. The second volume, kept by Sigel Matson, includes several school reports and daily class records for several classes at Cotner College. The entries date from 1898. Also included are several pages of information from 1896 on plants kept in Matson’s herbarium.
