Records: 1882-1908
Red Cloud, Webster County, Neb.: Insurance company
Size: 1 volume

BACKGROUND NOTE

The Springfield Fire and Marine Insurance Company was chartered in 1849 in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was one of the first insurance companies to embark in the agency business. The company had a large business in Chicago prior to the great fire of 1871, and its advertising claimed that those who were covered for property held in Chicago during the fire received every dollar that they were due.

Although the Springfield Insurance Company was not listed in the Nebraska State Gazetteer for the years covered by these records, the Kaley Brothers were listed as insurance agents in several of these volumes. The register in this collection shows Charles W. Kaley as agent. Charles W. Kaley’s obituary (1917) states that he and his brother entered into partnership in 1876. The 1879 Gazetteer lists the Kaley Brothers as attorneys, real estate agents, and collection and insurance agents. Whether the Red Cloud agency began in 1876 or 1879, this insurance business was undoubtedly one of Red Cloud’s earliest businesses.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
