SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection contains primarily newspaper clippings (1951-1956) of an editorial column entitled, “Trends of the Times,” by Walter Leonard Locke, taken from the Atlantic Journal. Locke was a former Nebraska State Journal associate editor who moved to the Dayton Daily News. He covered many different topics in the columns. Also included in the collection are correspondence between Locke and Henry M. Cox (Lincoln, Nebraska), and a couple of manuscripts. One manuscript discusses the political career of William Jennings Bryan, and the other manuscript concerns the search for wisdom. The second manuscript was given as a speech at the Unitarian Church (Lincoln, Nebraska) on May 26, 1957. The collection also includes several obituaries for Walter Leonard Locke.



Note:  The Library contains several publications by Walter Locke as well as copies of the Nebraska State Journal on microfilm. The Nebraska History index also contains several references to Walter Locke.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
