BACKGROUND NOTE



Born at Jackson, Michigan in August of 1874, Willard Verner Carter was working as a locomotive fireman in Omaha, Nebraska at the start of the Spanish-American War. He enlisted on May 13, 1898 and served in the Thurston Rifles, Co. L, First Nebraska Regiment, in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine insurrection. He was wounded on April 25, 1899 and discharged on August 23, 1899.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The scrapbook contains clippings, letters and photographs which pertain to the Spanish-American War. The scrapbook was compiled by Mrs. Louis (Carter) Wakefield.

It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
