BACKGROUND NOTE

Born in 1899 in Portland, Oregon, William Duncan Strong studied anthropology, receiving his B.A. degree in 1923 and Ph.D. in 1926 from the University of California at Berkley.  He worked for the Field Museum of Natural History and the University of Nebraska.  He also worked at the Bureau of American Ethnology before joining the faculty of Columbia University in 1937.  He served as the Chair of the Department of Anthropology for many years.  Strong headed several notable archeological excavations, including excavations in Honduras, as well as on the central Peruvian coast of Pachacamac, on the northern Peruvian coast of the Viru Valley, and on the southern Peruvian coast at the Nazca and Ica Valleys.  His 1935 study, An Introduction to Nebraska Archeology, provided an emphasis on direct historical approach in archeology.  William Duncan Strong died in 1962 and is buried in Orleans Cemetery at East Orleans, Massachusetts.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of two boxes of papers relating to William Duncan Strong’s work as an archeologist.  The collection is divided into two series, 1) Archeological field notes and 2) Manuscripts.  The first series consists of various field notes dating from ca. 1929 to 1931.  Various transcripts of the field notes are also included.  The second series contains manuscripts for Strong’s An Introduction to Nebraska Archeology, including research notes, tables and figures.
