SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of various personal papers of Winfield Scott Dunten dating from 1865-1914. Most of the materials relate to Dunten’s time in Seward County, Nebraska. Included are his certificate of marriage (1885) to Clara Belle Cady; his discharge papers (1865) from the Civil War where he had served with the Indiana Cavalry; receipts of payment of dues to the fraternal group, Royal Arch Masons, Lincoln Chapter No. 6; property tax records; homestead certificate (1874); certificate of admission to practice law in the District Courts of Iowa (1871); papers concerning property purchases; and brief information about the Dunten Family.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
