Albert Rhodes was born in Maine around 1835. He arrived in Nebraska City, Nebraska in the summer of 1857. A wheelwright by trade, Rhodes opened a wagon shop in Nebraska City with his two younger brothers. On July 8, 1858, he was married to Adelaide M. Bradford. Rhodes enlisted in Co. D, 1st Nebraska Regiment and was mustered into service as a sergeant on June 10, 1861. Discharged on August 24, 1864, there is no indication that he returned to Nebraska after his military service.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one item, a diary dating from 1857-1869; 1891; 1899. This diary relates primarily to the military service of Albert Rhodes of Co. D, 1st Nebraska Regiment during the Civil War. Most of the entries, therefore, are from the 1861-1864 time period, although an 1857 trip from Buffalo, New York to Leavenworth, Kansas is described. (This may be the trip that brought Rhodes to Nebraska.) It appears that Rhodes made additional entries in 1891, recording a death, and in 1899, noting John M. Thayer's tribute to Nebraska's civil war soldiers at a reunion of pioneers.
The diary is of most use as a war record of Co. D, 1st Nebraska Regiment during 1861-1864. In brief entries Rhodes traced the Regiments' movements, including the route from Omaha, through Missouri, to Tennessee where it was involved in battles of Fort Donelson and at Pittsburg Landing. Other engagements in Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Missouri are noted. The researcher should be aware that the order of the entries is sometimes confusing as Rhodes would intersperse his entries with narratives on the history of the war and the history of the discovery of America. A typed transcript of the diary volume is also available.
