BACKGROUND NOTE

Born at Waterloo, Wisconsin, on November 2, 1854, Olive Jane Bartlett attended school in Wisconsin before moving to Iowa with her parents.  She taught school in Iowa for a while, and then she and her parents moved to a farm near Friend, Nebraska.  Olive attended Doane College at Crete, Nebraska, and then taught at several nearby schools.  She married Oliver Baughn in 1882, and the couple moved to a farm near Tobias in Saline County, Nebraska.  The couple had six children.  Olive Jane (Bartlett) Baughn died at Tobias, Nebraska, on July 7, 1910.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box of materials relating to Olive (Bartlett) Baughn and various members of the Baughn family.  The collection includes a teaching certificate and four diaries kept by Olive Baughn.  Also included are two folders of Baughn family genealogical research.  The certificate and diaries date from the 1870s and 1880s, while the family research dates from the 1960s through the 1990s.  Olive’s diaries describe local happenings and events, family news, teaching school, etc.
