BACKGROUND NOTE

On December 30, 1941, 132 young men from the Grand Island area were sworn into the U.S. Army Air Corps as airplane mechanics. Fifteen days later, due to a mix up, these men arrived in Australia with no basic training to begin their service in the 403rd Bombardment Squadron. After training, the 403rd participated in several major campaigns, including Papua, New Guinea, the Bismarck Sea, Leyte, Luzon, and the Southern Philippines.

Dale F. Barr was one of the Grand Island men in the 403rd. He spent 32 months, beginning in March 1942, in Australia and New Guinea as a tail gunner on a B-17 and a B-24.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
