BACKGROUND NOTE

Born in New York on October 8, 1839, Francis E. Newton was the son of Caleb and Mary (Tuttle) Newton.  In 1860 he was living with his brother Sylvester’s family in Illinois.  He served with the 7^th Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War.  Newton married Jane Ferguson on January 1, 1867, in Bureau County, Illinois.  By the late 1870s the Newton’s had moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where Francis worked as a merchant dealing in farm implements, stoves and general housewares.  He was a partner in Wilson & Newton (formerly Wilson & Parker) and later F.E. Newton & Co., a real estate company located at 1013 O St.  Francis E. Newton died on July 18, 1903, and is buried in Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Nebraska.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box of correspondence dating from 1879 to 1881.  The letters relate to routine business transactions, indicating prices, discounts, terms, etc. from when Francis E. Newton worked as a dealer in farm implements, stoves and other household goods.  Some of the companies he corresponded with include Milton Rogers Wholesale Stoves, Tinware and Tinners Stock (Omaha, Nebraska); Rathbone, Sard & Co. (Chicago, Illinois); Cincinnati Stove Works (Cincinnati, Ohio); Ward & Everett (Cowles, Nebraska); J.H. Ballard & Co. (Seward, Nebraska); and Great Western Stove Company (Leavenworth, Kansas).
