BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

George Robinson Brock, son of Reuben C. and Caroline (Sweet) Brock, was born at Milford, Otsego County, New York, on April 19, 1851.  In 1858 the family moved west and settled at Davenport, Iowa.  George had several jobs over the next ten years, including delivering newspapers as well as bridge construction and mule driving for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad.  In 1869 George went to Lincoln, Nebraska, to work as a clerk for bankers James Sweet and Nelson C. Brock.  In 1871 he entered the University of Nebraska and took classwork for two years.  From 1873-1874 he worked at the State National Bank in Lincoln as a collection clerk and teller.  From 1874-1878 he worked for several companies in Lincoln, including Wells Fargo; Humphrey Brothers; Little, Brock & Curson; and First National Bank.  In 1879 he moved to Friend, Nebraska, and worked as a cashier for Southwick Bank.  He married Lena C. Gilmore on April 9, 1881.  They would have two children; Fred, born in 1882; and Gertrude, born in 1884.  In 1882 George and family moved to Guide Rock, Nebraska, where he established George R. Brock & Co.

George R. Brock died at Guide Rock, Nebraska, on November 9, 1890.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection contains family history and genealogy records for the Brock and the Sweet families. George R. Brock is noted particularly, with letters of introduction from Lincoln, Nebraska, businessmen for him and biographical information about him. Also included is a will for Amos Sweet, Sr.; a mostly blank small account book with the name of Brock's Pioneer Bank, Guide Rock, Nebraska, on the cover; and a letter from George's sister, Carrie, written to George, November 24, 1874, from Santa Barbara, California, telling of her health and describing life there.
