BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Hiram Chase was born on the Omaha reservation on September 9, 1861. His father, Hiram Chase, Sr., was a government inspector, and his mother, Nunzainza, was the granddaughter of Wahnookega, chief of the Omaha Indians. He attended school on the reservation and then was sent to the Lutheran farm school at Zelienople, Pennsylvania. He later returned to Nebraska and attended Bellevue College and the Normal School at Peru, Nebraska. In 1879 Chase returned to the family farm. He stayed on the farm and studied law on his own until 1889 when he went to Cincinnati, Ohio, to attend law school. After graduating with a bachelor of law degree, Hiram returned to Nebraska and was admitted to the state bar. In 1891 he moved to Pender, Nebraska, and started the law firm of Chase & Sloan. In 1893 Chase was elected county judge of Thurston County and served one term. He was elected county attorney in 1898 and re-elected in 1901. Hiram Chase married Cynthia Snyder in the spring of 1882. The couple had nine children. Mrs. Chase died in 1915. Hiram then married Nellie (Sheridan) Springer. Hiram Chase passed away at Chadron, at the home of his daughter, Isabelle Ammons, on December 3, 1928. He was buried next to his first wife in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Pender, Nebraska.
