BACKGROUND NOTE
Born in Maryland in 1808, Jacob Vore moved to Wayne County, Indiana, where he was engaged in the general mercantile and banking business. Vore owned stock in the First National Bank of Cambridge City, Indiana. He married Sarah Kirk in Wayne County on August 22, 1833. The couple had four children, Mary, William, James and Tacy. Vore remained in the mercantile and banking business for forty years before moving to Nebraska in 1875 to serve as Indian agent at the Omaha reservation. Jacob Vore died in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the home of his son, William, on December 20, 1901. He is buried in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, Omaha, Nebraska.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of two letters, undated, by Jacob Vore discussing his years as Agent to the Omaha Indians, 1876-1879. These letters were reprinted in the Nebraska State Historical Society’s Publications series, Volume 19 (1919), p. 114-125.
