BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE



John Messinger was born in Ohio in 1836.  He served as a private in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and moved to Marshall County, Iowa, sometime after the war.  Later he moved to Seward, Nebraska, where he served as a Supervisor of Public Instruction from 1879-1880.  He moved to Albion, Nebraska, sometime between April 1882 and Sept. 1883.  He then went to Florida where he died in 1887.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of sixteen letters (photocopies only).  Fourteen of the letters were written by Messinger to his wife; one letter written by him to his children; and one letter written by his children to him.  The letters deal with Messinger’s efforts in locating work in various towns, how much he misses his family, some description of the local area, and a description of a train trip from Albion, Nebraska, to Florida.

It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
