BACKGROUND NOTE
Born in Connecticut in 1834, Joseph Henry Bronson was living in Dubuque County, Iowa, when he mustered in to the Curtis Horse (which eventually became the 5th Iowa Cavalry) on September 17, 1861. He mustered out at Fort Heiman, Kentucky, on November 15, 1862.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one folder containing two letters written by Sergeant Bronson while serving during the Civil War. Bronson wrote the letters to Miss Ella Chubbock, Binghamton, New York. Bronson wrote the first letter from Fort Henry, Tennessee, on February 14-15, 1862. Bronson wrote the second letter from Fort Heiman, Kentucky, on May 21, 1862. The letters describe camp life, some troop movements, battles and members of his regiment either captured or killed. Typed transcripts of the letters are also included.
