BACKGROUND NOTE



The Nebraska Geological Society was organized in the spring of 1968 through the efforts of Robert Gaines, Regional Geologist with the Northern Natural Gas Company, and L.B. “Spike” Underwood, Division Geologist with the Army Corps of Engineers.  The first organizational meeting was held at the Fireside Restaurant in Omaha, Nebraska.  Mr. Warren Beebe, past president of the American Geological Institute, was the guest speaker.  The first officers of the Society included:



President, Robert Gaines, Northern Natural Gas Company

Vice President, Vincent Dreeszen, Nebraska Geological Survey

Secretary, Duane Eversoll, Nebraska Highway Department

Treasurer, Al Burling, Army Corps of Engineers

Executive Committee Chair, Dr. Sam Treves, University of Nebraska



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of the records of the Nebraska Geological Society.  The collection includes correspondence, minutes of meetings, treasurer’s reports, membership lists, etc.  The materials in the collection date from ca. 1960-2017.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
