BACKGROUND NOTE
Hitchcock County experienced a large influx of Welsh settlers in the mid-1880s. Settlement was concentrated around Pleasant View and Trenton Precincts (T2N, R33W and R34W), an area which became known as the Rosefield neighborhood. The Rosefield Sabbath School and Church were established in this small Welsh enclave, seven miles southwest of Trenton, Nebraska. The first meeting was probably held in the home of John W. Hughes in Trenton Precinct (NW 1/4, S19, T2N, R33W). Other individuals listed in early minutes of the organization were John O. Jones, J.C. Owens, G.W. Hughes, Charles E. Jones, and George Humphres. Regular services were normally held in the Rosefield School.
Obituaries of several members describe the church as being Methodist Calvinistic. On January 5, 1897, the group reorganized as the Rosefield Congregational Church and membership was extended beyond the Welsh community. Despite a broader membership, sermons and hymns were often in Welsh. The congregation began keeping detailed records in 1887. The Rosefield Sabbath School and Church were dissolved in 1919.
