Robert Humphries, Executive Director of the Great Plains Welsh Heritage Project, and Gwenith Closs-Colgrove, President of the Great Plains Welsh Heritage Project will share the story of Welsh immigrants who settled in communities like Wymore, NE. About Gwenith Closs-Colgrove

I grew up on a family farm just south of Wymore and was homesteaded in 1878 by my great-grandfather Humphrey Closs. The Bethel Welsh community was close knit and all services at the Calvinistic Methodist were held in Welsh until the 1920’s. My father, Ellsworth Closs, was the last Welsh speaker and when he passed away in 2000, Some individuals from that area asked if we would donate his memorial money to start a Welsh museum. I have served as President of the Great Plains Welsh Heritage Project since 2016 and we have grown to be the premier Welsh museum and Archive in North America.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
